IMAF 2006 – Anime and Manga Competition

IMAF invites both professional and committed amateur animators, promo producers and illustrators to enter work for the IMAF 2006 Anime and Manga Competition.

A cash prize fund of $75,000 will be awarded across our new categories - our judges and festival visitors await your entries – so get creating!

Please read and consider the rules of the competition carefully. When you enter the competition you will automatically and expressly agree to be bound by the rules set out below.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

General Entry Requirements

1) Closing date for entries is 16th October 2006, 5:30pm, GMT. All entries received after that date will not be entered in the competition but may be shown at the festival if space is available.

2) Work must be original and created by the named entrant.

3) Entries will be either complete Manga animated characters, print cartoon comics, Manga animated films or an animated ident.

4) Individuals can enter more than one category and submit more than one entry within each category. Commercial enterprises are permitted to enter more than one category, but are only allowed one entry per category.

5) There is no registration or entry fee but entrants accept in entering the competition to be bound by these terms and conditions.

6) All animation entries must be sent by post.

7) Entrants give permission by way of licence to IMAF to use their entry throughout the world in all media for the duration of their full term of copyright for the purposes of exhibition in competition and to promote and publicise IMAF. Entrants consent to the editing and use of extracts of entries for these purposes.

8) IMAF reserves the right to exclude from the competition any entry which they consider to be of a sexual or violent nature such that its exhibition to the public would be contrary to good taste and decency or would be incapable of receiving a BBFC 18 Certificate.

9) The decision of the IMAF judges is final and binding and no correspondence will be entered into.

10) Only the prizewinners will be contacted personally.

11) Prizes must be taken as stated and cannot be deferred.

12) IMAF will not pass on personal details to any other organisation.

13) This competition is not open to employees or contractors of County Hall Animation Studio Enterprises or any person directly or indirectly involved in the organisation or running of the competition or their direct family members.

14) The winners will be notified by post/email.

15) Although there is no entry fee, all costs incurred in connection with the entry must be borne entirely by the entrant.

16) Entries created by professionals as well as amateurs can be submitted and will be eligible for competition.

17) All students in full-time education can be considered for the Student Special Award.

18) Entries created for commercial or other purposes will be accepted into competition.

19) Entries that have been submitted as entries to or have won other competitions are eligible for the competition.

20) Submitted items will not be returned and shall remain the property of IMAF.

21) Entrants warrant they are the sole proprietors of the copyrights and the sole authors of their entries and to the extent that any third parties have rights in the entries the entrants have obtained all necessary authorities and paid all necessary fees and IMAF will not be liable to make any payments to third parties for the uses licensed to IMAF set out above.

22) Entrants agree to indemnify IMAF for any damages for which it may become liable arising from breaches of these warranties.

23) IMAF reserves the right to exclude from competition any entry which is the subject of a dispute as to proprietorship of copyright or authorship or third party interest.

24) In the event that an assertion of infringement of right or claim for compensation is made by a third party, the entrant will be required to respond on his or her own responsibility. IMAF accept no responsibility whatsoever for the contents of entries.

25) In the event the judges consider no entry of sufficient quality they reserve the right to name no winner of a competition category and award no prize.

26) This competition is subject to the laws of England and Wales and the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

27) For the names of the prize winners please send a SAE to: IMAF Competition 2006, c/o Trocadero Studio, County Hall, Riverside Building, Westminster, London, SE1 7PB by 30th December 2006.

28) IMAF is the acronym for International Manga & Anime Festival.

Submission Formats

We will be displaying as many entries as possible – all short listed entries will be displayed. In order to maintain the highest quality film and print reproduction for the festival exhibition, the submission formats are as follows and must be strictly adhered to.

1) Submitted items will not be returned and shall remain the property of IMAF.

2) All film animations and idents must be submitted in DVD or MiniDV formats, in QuickTime Movie, AVI or MPEG – use the highest quality equipment available to you. They need to be written either on DVD or CD. If you want your entry appear in the on-site gallery, you must also provide a compressed version – maximum 10MB.

3) Character designs and print-cartoon comics must be uploaded in the gallery section of the website in the format best suited to your design (PNG, GIF, JPEG) – maximum file size 300KB. The Zip file feature must be used for print-cartoon comics of 6 pages and over. Please ensure that the page numbers correspond to the order in which files are added to the zip archive. To achieve that, add numbers 01, 02 etc. to the names of files so that they sort in the correct order.

4) Please have a print-quality uncompressed 300dpi minimum TIFF version of your work ready, in the event of your work making the short list.

5) Our preferred method of entry for all character design categories is by uploading directly onto the website. Postal entries will only appear on the website after the close of the festival.

JUDGING PANEL

We have taken steps to select a panel of judges who have extensive experience, both practical and theoretical, in the art of Manga and Anime and who are acutely aware of the challenges faced when judging traditional and contemporary approaches to the genre.

JUDGES CRITERIA

Here is an example of the criteria our panel of judges will be using (but not necessarily exclusively) in order to judge each entry on the following:

Once the individual categories have been short listed, the winner of each category will be chosen.

The Festival overall winner will be selected from all short listed entries.

The judges have the authority to award special prizes to recognize outstanding talent or dedication to Manga and Anime, among the entries, entrants, or industry as a whole.
